As part of its effort to fight sanctuary cities, Congress should remove the personal immunity public officials who promote them receive, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal says.
"Let's recognize these mayors, these city officials, they are partners in crime," Jindal said Wednesday on Fox News Channel's
"The O'Reilly Factor."
"They should be held criminally liable as accomplices for the crimes committed by these folks that are here illegally thanks to these sanctuary cities."
Under federal law, people can be charged as an accessory after the fact, such as helping or harboring someone, Jindal said. "That's what these folks are doing."
Jindal also wants to see officials held civilly liable so families of crime victims can sue them personally. "Let's give the families of these victims an opportunity to go to court."
The killing of Kate Steinle in San Francisco on July 1 has sparked calls by Republicans and some Democrats in Congress to take action against "sanctuary cities," which refuse to comply with federal law and turn over illegal immigrants for deportation. An illegal immigrant deported to Mexico five times is charged with her murder.
Proponents of "Kate's Law," named for Steinle,
want to withhold federal funding from any areas that declare themselves sanctuary cities.
