Media Matters: Bill O'Reilly Lied About Witnessing Nun Murders

By    |   Thursday, 26 Feb 2015 04:25 PM

Fox News host Bill O'Reilly is under fire again from the liberal media watchdog Media Matters over reports that he was not in El Salvador when he claimed to have witnessed the murder of four American nuns in that Central American country, Politico reported.

On his radio show in 2005 and his Fox News television show seven years later, O'Reilly said that in El Salvador, he witnessed nuns "get shot in the back of the head while covering the civil war there."

Media Matters said that, in his book "The No Spin Zone", O'Reilly said he did not arrive in El Salvador until 1981. The nuns were murdered on Dec. 2, 1980.

"My mother, for example, doesn't understand evil," O'Reilly said on his television show Dec. 14, 2012 – the day of the Newtown, Connecticut mass shootings at an elementary school. "When I would tell her, for example, 'Hey, I was in El Salvador and I saw nuns get shot in the back of the head,' she almost couldn't process it," O'Reilly added.

O'Reilly told Mediaite that he was trying to make a point about how ordinary people cannot comprehend unspeakable evil. He said he was referring to seeing images of the nuns being shot and that he was not claiming to have personally witnessed the violence.

"While in El Salvador, reporters were shown horrendous images of violence that were never broadcast, including depictions of nuns who were murdered. The mention of the nuns on my program came the day of the Newtown massacre (December 14, 2012)," O'Reilly said. "The segment was about evil and how hard it is for folks to comprehend it. I used the murdered nuns as an example of that evil. That's what I am referring to when I say, 'I saw nuns get shot in the back of the head.' No one could possibly take that segment as reporting on El Salvador," the Fox host said.

O'Reilly has been accused of multiple distortions of the truth by liberal outlets. He has also come under fire for allegedly exaggerating claims that he was in a combat zone during the 1982 Falklands War between Britain and Argentina and witnessed protesters getting shot.

And O'Reilly has also been accused of lying about being outside a home in which an associate of JFK assassin Lee Harvey Oswald committed suicide.

Fox News has forcefully backed O'Reilly, calling the charges against him an orchestrated campaign by "far-left" groups. Fox adds that responding to the allegations has become "an exercise in futility."
