Report: Liberal Schools Become Havens of Anti-Semitism

Some of the nation's most famously liberal universities are becoming havens of anti-Semitism, with graffitied swastikas appearing on school property and Jewish students saying the atmosphere on campus has become more openly hostile and even threatening, The Daily Beast reports.

These "bastions of political correctness" where hate speech appears to be tolerated as long as it's directed at supporters of Israel include the University of California at Berkeley, The Daily Beast reports.

Berkeley students are finding swastikas scrawled "on dorms, on bathroom walls, just random places on campus," Ori Herschmann, a senior and student government representative, told The Daily Beast.

He said that during last summer's fighting between Israel and Hamas, he himself encountered sidewalk graffiti proclaiming, "Death to Israel" and "Kill all the Jews."

This month, graffiti was found in a campus bathroom reading, "Zionists should be sent to the gas chamber," campus officials and Berkeley police told The Daily Beast.

Swastikas have appeared on other campuses as well, The Daily Beast reports, citing one Nazi symbol found painted on a Jewish fraternity mailbox at the University of Oregon in July, and multiple swastikas found spray-painted on a Jewish fraternity house at Emory University in October, shortly after Yom Kippur.

Getting campus administrators to treat these incidents seriously is another issue, according to Jewish students in a national survey conducted early in 2014, even before the Gaza conflict erupted.

"The response of many university faculty and administrators to Jewish complaints and outrage often shows that their threshold for the definition of the existence of the crime of anti-Semitism is set ridiculously high," wrote researchers Barry A. Kosmin and Ariela Keysar in the study published by the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law and Trinity College.

Famed attorney and law professor Alan Dershowitz has charged that anti-Jewish animus on campuses like UC Berkeley in fact emanates from the front offices and faculty lounges and trickles down to students as part of the accepted academic discourse.

Dershowitz cited the bizarre spectacle of a UCLA student government candidate, Rachel Beyda, being quizzed about her Jewishness, saying Beyda's college-age interrogators get such ideas "from biased, bigoted professors."
