Surf's Up for Beach Boys Once More

The Beach Boys are surfing to the top of the charts once again with their first album of new material since 1992. The album, “That’s Why God Made the Radio” has given the iconic surf band its highest-ever chart debut.

The album raced onto the chart at No. 3 , according to Billboard magazine.

The Beach Boys' first  hit "Surfin' U.S.A." made the top ten the week of June 15, 1963. According to Billboard magazine, “The Beach Boys' stretch between their first week in the Billboard 200 top 10 to their most recent is now the longest among groups, passing the Beatles, whose top 10 span covers 47 years, seven months and three weeks.”

The group is on a 50th anniversary tour, which has a stop in in Washington, D.C. this weekend.

The reunited lineup consists of Brian Wilson, his cousin and frontman Mike Love, rhythm guitarist Alan Jardine, keyboardist Bruce Johnston and guitarist David Marks. Wilson’s younger brothers and founding members Dennis and Carl are long gone but appear at the concerts in old clips on a background screen, the Toronto Star reported.

Wilson, who has produced or co-produced 30 of The Beach Boys’ 36 top-40 hits, told the Star, “The musicianship is a lot better than it used to be. It’s quite a thrill to play with them. They’re great musicians and great singers, too.”

A review of a recent  Cleveland show by Ultimate Classic Rock.com website described the experience as nostalgia-driven. “Nostalgia is a strange monster. At times we may cringe, and other times we embrace it. The Beach Boys 50th Anniversary Tour is all about nostalgia, but it’s more than a bunch of ‘remember when’ moments strung together via song. It’s about the legacy of one of America’s — make that one of the world’s — greatest musical entities ever,” the review said.

“On a seasonably cool evening in Ohio, the Beach Boys managed to shine a light on that legacy very brightly,” the website reported. “It is all-but impossible to name another band on the road that dishes out a 47-song set, let alone one where the core members are all just shy of, or just past, 70 years old."
