Foreign spies likely were at Wednesday's Capitol riot, according to a Republican staffer who resigned from the House Armed Services Committee in the aftermath of the insurrection.

The staffer, Jason Schmid, resigned his position in a letter to the incoming ranking member, Rep. Mike Rogers  R-Ala. Politico first reported the letter Tuesday.

In the letter, Schmid explains his main reason for resigning was Republicans' support of President Donald Trump's allegation of voter fraud in the presidential election and its fueling of protesters who stormed the Capitol.

Schmid also wrote the U.S. will suffer due to foreign intelligence likely at the insurrection, per the Daily Mail.

"Foreign intelligence services were likely on the scene and will certainly capitalize on the crisis it has caused — our people will pay a steep price," Schmid warned. "Congressional enablers of this mob have made future foreign conflict more likely, not less."

A total of 147 House Republicans and seven GOP senators objected to the Electoral College results in Arizona and Pennsylvania on Wednesday during a joint session of Congress that was interrupted by a violent mob attacking the Capitol.

"A poisonous lie that the election was illegitimate and should be overturned inspired so called 'patriots' to share common cause with white supremacists, neo-Nazis and conspiracy theorists to attack the seat of American government," Schmid wrote.

"Anyone who watched those horrible hours unfold should have been galvanized to rebuke these insurrectionists in the strongest terms. Instead, some members whom I believed to be leaders in the defense of the nation chose to put political theater ahead of the defense of the Constitution and the Republic."

The electoral objectors included 13 members of the Armed Services Committee, for which Schmid worked four and a half years as a top policy staffer.

Schmid said objecting to the electoral vote tallies put every service U.S. military official and diplomat in harm's way.

"How are they to effectively defend American democratic ideals when the entire world saw so many members disregard those same ideals for cynical political purposes?" Schmid asked.
