As Americans came together to celebrate the Fourth of July Thursday, several parade celebrations ended in tragedy after children were killed or injured by parade floats.
At Oklahoma's largest hometown parade in Edmond, an 8-year-old boy riding on a martial arts group's float was accidentally run over by his father who was driving the float after he got down or fell from the vehicle at the end of the parade, the Associated Press reported
The boy was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
In Annapolis, Maryland, a 7-year-old boy fell from a moving trailer that was connected to a van being driven by his grandfather, according to Baltimore's CBS affiliate
The float was getting ready to participate in the parade when the boy tried to get off. Police say he was hit by a trailer tire. The boy was taken to the hospital where he later died from injuries.
Others were injured in parades. A 14-year-old boy was sent to the hospital with serious injuries in Indiana after falling from a farm wagon being used as a float for Lebanon Youth Football, said the Indianapolis Star
. A 39-year-old woman and an 11-year-old boy also fell from the float, but police say their injuries were minor. A girl was injured in a separte incident at the same parade.
