New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is calling for a “heroes fund” to raise money for healthcare workers and first responders dealing with the coronavirus outbreak, which killed 777 New Yorkers on Friday.

So far, 7,067 New Yorkers have died from the coronavirus, hitting a one-day high of 799 deaths on Thursday, Cuomo said in a press conference according to the New York Daily News. However, the number of patients in intensive care units has fallen for the first time since the beginning of the outbreak in the state, and the number of patients hospitalized stayed almost level.

“We continue to lose a great number of lives,” Cuomo said. “The leveling off of the number of lives lost is a somewhat hopeful sign."

“We are cautiously optimistic,” he added. “We are flattening the curve.”

The governor called for a “heroes fund” similar to the one set up in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks for healthcare workers and first responders. He also called on President Donald Trump to invoke the Defense Production Act to increase testing capabilities.

“Testing, testing, testing - that’s what New Yorkers need,” Cuomo said.

He also blasted Congress for “pork barrel” spending in the recent $2 trillion stimulus bill that was passed in response to the coronavirus outbreak, implying that Republicans in the Senate played politics with the aid rather than distributing it to the states that need it the most.
