New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Saturday praised Oregon for lending New York City 140 of its own ventilator stockpile and China for sending 1,000.

"The Chinese government helped facilitate a donation of 1,000 ventilators that will arrive in JFK today," Cuomo said during his daily briefing Saturday, praising the facilitation of Chinese Amb. Huang Ping.

It was ostensibly a veiled shot at the Trump administration's hesitation to deplete the U.S. Strategic National Stockpile as Cuomo also praised the state of Oregon for helping what has become the world epicenter for the global coronavirus pandemic.

"The state of Oregon contacted us and is going to send 140 ventilators, which is, I tell you, just astonishing and unexpected," Cuomo said. "I want to thank Gov. [Kate] Brown, and I want to thank all the people in the state of Oregon for their thoughtfulness.

"Again, this was unsolicited, but the 140 ventilators will make a difference."

Cuomo's says New York will return the ventilators once they are done with them.

"I was thinking about it on behalf of New York and what it means for Oregon," Cuomo said. "First, it was a kind gesture. I know Gov. Brown and she is a kind person, but it's also smart from the point of view of Oregon. Why? Because we're all in the same battle here and the battle is stopping the spread of the virus."

Trump has criticized New York for stockpiling ventilators and thinks Cuomo should have done more to prepare for a pandemic.

New York state has 113,704 confirmed COVID-19 cases, almost four times the next closest state, New Jersey.

Cuomo on Saturday also praised China for its ability to contain the virus.

"Look at what they did in China," Cuomo said. "It was in the Wuhan province," Cuomo said, mistaking the city of Wuhan for the Hubei province. "First order of business was contain the virus in Wuhan. Why? Because you want to contain the enemy. That's always the first step."

Cuomo's state has fared less favorably than China, the largest country in the world (1.386 billion people). The U.S. (population 327.2 million) is about about one-fifth the size of China.

New York state has reported almost 30,000 less confirmed cases than China alone has reported, though there is U.S. intelligence skepticism of the veracity of China's coronavirus case reporting.

New York state has suffered 3,565 deaths to coronavirus, while China has reported just 3,326 coronavirus deaths. China is more than 700 times the population of New York state.
