A Connecticut woman who "grew up around guns" said Tuesday that she destroyed her weapon because "semi-automatic weapons were made for killing people."

"I was starting to advocate against other people having them and realized it was hypocritical that I had one as well," Amanda Meyer, a teacher who's school is within 20 miles from Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, told Brooke Baldwin on CNN. "I thought the best thing to do would be to get rid of it."

In a YouTube video posted this week, Meyer said she destroyed her SIG Sauer P226, a full-sized, service-type pistol, because "the only way that I can know for sure that this gun will never hurt anyone is if it doesn't exist.

"I'm going to make sure there's one less gun in the world."

Meyer told Baldwin that, besides working close to Sandy Hook, her brother committed suicide with a gun and that her cousin and his wife had left the scene of the Las Vegas massacre shortly before the shooting began.

"They really could have been there," she said. "Just like that school could have been our school and they could have been at that concert.

"Those things are hitting too close to home these days," Meyer said.

She added that another reason for destroying her weapon was because "this is where humanity comes in.

"You have to do the cost-benefit analysis at some point," she said. "To me, it's totally normal to be around guns.

"I grew up around guns. We'd go out shooting guns. Family Christmas. It's not family Christmas until you go out and shoot targets.

"You have to do the cost-benefit analysis — and we say that these guns were made for killing people.

"Semi-automatic weapons were made for killing people," Meyer told Baldwin. "There's no question about that. It's their only function.

"Do we really want to contribute to a culture that is endorsing that?

"It starts to weigh on you after a time."
