N.Y. City May Get 16 Inches of Snow, Blizzard Conditions Likely

Sunday, 26 December 2010 08:53 AM EST

New York City may get its biggest snowfall of the season today, with as much as 16 inches forecast and blizzard conditions likely, as Christmas travelers try to make their way home.

The snow is expected to fall in the New York area beginning late this morning and into tomorrow, with gusts of as much as 50 miles per hour (80 kilometers per hour), AccuWeather said. The National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning, beginning at 6 a.m. Boston could see 12 to 18 inches of snowfall along with wind gusts of as much as 60 mph, starting tonight.

“This could be a major headache once you get to Philadelphia and points north,” said Dave Samuhel, a meteorologist with AccuWeather.com in State College, Pennsylvania.

The winter storm headed to the Northeast dropped four inches (10 centimenters) of snow yesterday in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Samuhel said. Eight inches fell near Gatlinburg, Tennessee, the U.S. National Weather Service said, citing local law enforcement officials.

About 1 inch fell in Louisville, Kentucky, on Christmas morning, the National Weather Service said. Five inches fell in Bowling Green, Kentucky, near the Tennessee border, the agency said.

Philadelphia may get as much as 12 inches of snow starting early this morning, while Washington is forecast to get as much as 4 inches during the day, he said. Baltimore is expected to receive as much as 4 inches of snow.

Temperatures for all of the cities are expected to be in the 20-degree Fahrenheit range, he said.

“There’s no question whether this will be rain or snow,” Samuhel said. “This will be snow.”

Yesterday, Amtrak canceled some service between Richmond, Virginia, and Newport News, Virginia, for the weekend and tomorrow due to the storm.
