There is "zero chance" of President Donald Trump firing Labor Secretary Alex Acosta over his handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case, according to a source close to Trump who spoke with Axios.

Acosta was the U.S. attorney for Florida in 2008 when Epstein was offered a secret plea deal by federal prosecutors for allegations of child sex trafficking.

Many Democrats have called on Acosta to resign following Epstein's new indictment on similar charges brought Sunday by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

Acosta at Trump's urging Wednesday defended his role in the Epstein sexual abuse scandal, maintaining he secured the best deal he could when he helped Epstein serve just 13 months in prison for felony prostitution charges.

"Facts are important and facts are being overlooked," Acosta told reporters at the Labor Department in Washington. "These cases are complex, especially when they involve children."

Epstein also argued his office intervened only after state prosecutors were ready to let Epstein walk free.

"Simply put, the Palm Beach state attorney's office was ready to let Epstein walk free, no jail time," he said. "Prosecutors in my former office found this to be completely unacceptable."

Trump on Tuesday backed Acosta and said he has done a "fantastic job."
