Iran is paying attention to the Democratic presidential primary debates and knows the candidates are not drawing red lines and will avoid going to war, according to legal expert Alan Dershowitz on Newsmax TV.
"Iran has been clearly encouraged by the Democratic candidates," Dershowitz told Tuesday's "Newsmax Now." "Virtually all of the candidates, all of whom in the debates have refused to impose a red line. Several of the candidates said they would under no circumstances take no military action against Iran.
"So, I think you have to think Iran is hoping the Democrats win and they will then have a president who has sworn to take no military action. It will give them tremendous freedom."
Israel will not allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons, with or without the U.S., but the Democratic candidates need to be pressed on where their red line is with an emboldened Iran nuclear program, Dershowitz told host John Bachman.
Dershowitz is author of "Defending Israel: The Story of My Relationship with My Most Challenging Client" – due out in September but available to pre-order now.
"I hope in the next debate the Democratic candidates are all asked what their red line is," Dershowitz said. "'If Iran is on the verge of developing a nuclear arsenal, would you take military action?' ... That's the key question.
"And nobody asked it of the Democratic candidates, and I'm very concerned of the answers they give to that question."
Merely accepting Iran as a "limited" nuclear power is not good enough, Dershowitz said. There has to be continuous pressure to keep them from becoming a nuclear-capable country at all.
"The world is better off if it prevents Iran from developing nuclear weapons than if it allows it to do so," Dershowitz said.
