Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, says black Americans ought to consider turning down White House invitations until President Donald Trump apologizes for his comments about NFL players who kneel during the national anthem.

In remarks Wednesday on the "Joe Madison Show" on SiriusXM radio, Green called it "unconscionable that we would allow this President to do this with impunity," he said, referring to Trump's use of an expletive to describe the protesting athletes.

"He took discourse to a new level of indecency," Green charged. "For him to say 'SOBs.' . . . You don't talk about a man's mother in that fashion. There are conseqauences when you do that. There are consequences."

The interview was first posted by CNN.

"Every black person ought to give some consideration, if you get an invitation, as to whether you will go to the White House until he either retracts that statement or does something else to atone, because this requires atonement," Green urged.

"I refuse to allow it to go unchallenged," he added.

Trump doubled down on his criticism of the protesting players, however, saying the National Football league ought to have rules mandating players to stand for the "Star-Spangled Banner."
