Schiff: Barr Likely Won't Resign, Impeachment Difficult

(CNN's "New Day")

By    |   Wednesday, 01 May 2019 01:45 PM EDT

House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., on Wednesday joined other Democrats in calling on Attorney General William Barr to resign but admitted he has "no expectation that he will" and said it would be difficult for Congress to impeach the attorney general.

"We could certainly try to remove [Barr] from office," Rep. Schiff told CNN's "New Day." "But that would face the same difficulty and obstacle as removing the President through an impeachment proceeding. Look, we are going to consider all of the options here."

He acknowledged members of Congress are "having that conversation" about Barr, as they believe he is biased toward President Donald Trump and his administration and is unable to carry out his duties fairly.

Democrats are also considering ways to "conduct the same oversight through a non-impeachment process," Schiff said.

Meanwhile, he said Barr, who testified Wednesday to members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, "willingly misled the Congress" on April 9, when he appeared to be unaware several members of special counsel Robert Mueller's team were frustrated by the way their report was summarized.

"For an ordinary citizen, we might consider whether that's perjury, but it's worse when it comes from the attorney general of the United States because it means the public cannot have confidence in what he says," Schiff said. "It means we cannot have confidence in how he administers justice, and I think that's going to be very much a subject of today's hearing."
