Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said during an event on Tuesday the Department of Education won't track coronavirus school reopenings in districts throughout the country.

“Well I'm not sure there's a role for the Department of Education to compile and conduct that research,” DeVos said at an event hosted by the Milken Institute.

DeVos was responding to a question about how to ease back into in-person schooling.

“The data is there for those who want it,” DeVos said, in reference to coronavirus-related numbers kept by local and state governments.

Many public school districts throughout the United States are struggling to come up with safe school reopening strategies that won't infect kids and teachers with coronavirus.

President Donald Trump has urged school districts to reopen in-person classes but has received pushback from teaching officials in the process.

"Donald Trump's disregard for science has already cost 200,000 American lives during this pandemic. Secretaries Alex Azar and Betsy DeVos are accomplices in this malicious incompetence," National Education Association President Becky Pringle wrote in a letter this September.
