Fourteen years ago today, terrorists hijacked three passenger planes where two rammed into New York City's World Trade Center and one crash-landed in a field in Pennsylvania. Between the two tragedies it caused nearly 3,000 people to perish and left 9/11 as a somber day and one that will never be forgotten.

In remembrance of the deadliest attack on American soil Rep. Peter King of New York released a statement noting that the tragedy showed America's "unsurpassed courage."

Rep. Pete King Statement on 14th Anniversary of September 11th:

Today is the 14th anniversary of the most tragic and devastating attack on American soil in our nation's history. New York and Long Island suffered previously unimaginable losses that day, with many hundreds of our Long Island neighbors being murdered. None of us ever wants to see another September 11th and for the past 14 years I have dedicated myself to protecting our nation and region from Islamist terrorist attacks. As a member of the Homeland Security and Intelligence Committees and as Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence, I assure I will keep up those efforts.

But today is the day to remember all those who were murdered on September 11th as well as their families who continue to suffer all these years later. We also must commit ourselves to do all that we can to provide health care for the police officers, firefighters and construction workers who incurred debilitating and life threatening illnesses from their rescue and recovery work at Ground Zero.

9/11 was America's most tragic day but it also demonstrated America's unsurpassed courage and greatness. God Bless America!
