Va. Conservative Running Against Allen for Senate

A well-known Virginia conservative has decided to take on former Gov. George Allen for the Republican nomination to the U.S. Senate, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
State Republican Del. Robert G. Marshall confirmed his intentions Thursday, the newspaper reported, setting up what it described as “a potentially ugly fight” as Republicans seek to fill the seat being vacated by retiring Democrat Jim Webb.
There are other challengers in the race for the GOP nomination with Allen, but the Senate contest was considered to be a given matchup this November between Allen and former Democratic Gov. Tim Kaine.
Virginia political expert Larry Sabato told the Times-Dispatch that would still be the likely scenario for the general election. But he said Marshall may cause Allen “some indigestion” before the primary election on June 12.
“Whatever he says now, he is not going to hold back,” Sabato said of Marshall, “and he knows how to grab headlines. He’s well-known to the press, the public and the activists, and he’s in a class by himself among these challengers to Allen.”
