A Swedish zoo killed nine healthy lion cubs over the last six years because it couldn't afford to keep them or transport them elsewhere.

"Based in scientific practice, we use translocation, contraception and the euthanasia of surplus animals as population management tools," the zoo said on its website.

Most of the euthanized lions killed were 1½ or 2 years old when they were killed.

The zoo's news release said the nine lions were picked due to "group aggressions," stating "these animals were unfortunately not possible to relocate within the community."

The zoo said its practices follow the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria and World Association of Zoos and Aquariums policies.

“It’s no secret in any way,” zoo CEO Bo Kjellson told Swedish broadcaster SVC, according to The Independent.

The zoo was unsure whether it would euthanize any other lions.

“That we will see in the future,” Kjellson told SVC. “Currently, the group works well, but some of them may become surplus animals, and then we will try to place them elsewhere.”

Only two of 13 cubs in three litters are still alive, The Independent reported. Two cubs died of natural causes and the rest were euthanized.

Among other solutions, Twitter users suggested not breeding the lions if they're just going to be killed.
