Zionist Organization of America President Morton A. Klein has decided not to accept an invitation to meet with the emir and crown prince of Qatar after misinformation and rumors began to spread about the potential meeting.

In a press release, Klein said that he had been invited to meet with the Qatari leaders when they would be in New York for United Nations General Assembly sessions, and was assured that the meeting, if it did take place, would be confidential.

ZOA has repeatedly criticized Qatar for its support of Hamas and for the Al-Jazeera TV station, which it runs, and which promotes hatred and violence against Israel. Funds pledged by Qatar in 2012 – $400 million – were another source of criticism.

“Such funds paid for Hamas rockets and sophisticated terror tunnels that led to the bloody 2014 Gaza war,” Klein wrote in the release. Klein said he had considered meeting with Qatar, however, because they had been an ally of Israel in the 1990s, and he had met with the former emir and other officials during those times.

“I can still remember the time when Qatar was not funding Hamas terrorists dedicated to murdering every Jew,” Klein continued. Currently, Klein said, Qatar’s leaders “are collectively the world’s foremost purveyor of Islamist propaganda and the most important strategic ally for the Iranian theocracy that wishes to wipe Israel off the map.”

Klein said that it seemed that Qatar wanted to meet with Jewish leaders to make it seem like it was an ally, but that it was only “a PR event” to fool others into thinking they were reforming. He said he does not want to “legitimize” Qatar’s actions and that he would meet with them if they take clear steps to distance itself from Hamas, such as deporting leaders in Qatar and getting Hamas to release Israeli prisoners and bodies.
