Zapier, a tech company located in the Bay Area, is offering its employees $10,000 each to move away from the area.

Wayne Foster, the chief executive officer of Zapier, a workflow automation startup that helps users to connect apps, made his "de-location package" pitch to his employees on his blog last Friday.

While Silicon Valley is the capital of the world's tech industry, Foster said he thinks many people would like to leave the area in search of a better quality of life, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

With the boom in the tech industry, the Bay Area has become one of the most expensive places to live, with San Jose and San Francisco listed in the 10 least affordable housing markets in the world, according to the 2017 Demographia International Housing Affordability Survey.

"Part of the allure was and is its thriving tech scene," Foster wrote on his blog about the Bay Area. "Like any new place, the Bay Area is fantastic to be in for the first time. If you work in tech in a small town, coming to the Bay Area is like coming to the big leagues.

"… Some of us fall in love with the area and are financially able to make this home. But for the rest of us, it can be a real challenge to turn the Bay Area into a life-long home rather than a short stop somewhere in our 20s and 30s. The housing crunch and high cost of living simply price out many families and, despite loving the area, the realities are many of us need to look elsewhere to create the life we want for our families," he continued.

Foster, who moved his company from Missouri five years ago, said that Zapier's team is 100 percent remote, making it easier to work away from its headquarters in Mountain View, California. The $10,000 would be used for expenses to relocate somewhere outside the Bay Area.

"The recruiting industry has long offered relocation assistance to convince you to move somewhere you may not prefer," Foster wrote. "We think it's time you get assistance to take a new role you'll love and move to the exact place you want to be."

There are some restrictions. The $10,000 will be a reimbursement of expenses incurred during the first three months of the move, and not given up front. Moving employees must stay at Zapier for at least a year after the move.
