Zach Wahls may become one of the country’s youngest state lawmakers after having won the Democratic primary for Iowa’s Senate District 37.

Seven years ago, when Wahls was 19, he delivered a speech about growing up with two mothers in a lesbian household to the Iowa House Judiciary Committee.

“My family really isn’t so different from yours,” the Iowa teen told committee members at the time, according to ABC News. His appearance was prompted by a constitutional amendment then under consideration that would have banned gay marriage and civil unions.

“Not once have I ever been confronted by an individual who realized independently that I was raised by a gay couple,” Wahls continued. “And you know why? Because the sexual orientation of my parents has had zero effect on the content of my character.”

The now-26-year-old tweeted a two-word message to his followers Tuesday night after the votes were counted.

With four candidates vying for the nomination, Wahls grabbed 60 percent of the vote. The second-place finisher, former diplomat Janice Weiner, walked away with 34.8 percent.

“I think it’s a sign people here are hungry for new blood in the Iowa Legislature and are ready for the next generation of leadership,” Wahls said Tuesday, according to The Gazette. “It means a lot to me the community is trusting me with that leadership role.”

When Wahls announced his candidacy in December, he brought up his appearance before the legislature as a teen.

“It seems like we’re really at a crossroads between a situation where it’s every man, woman and child for him or herself and getting back to the morals that have defined this state,” he told the Iowa City Press-Citizen at the time of his announcement.

“I am running because I believe all Iowans need a seat at the table. That absolutely means more women running, it means more young people, it means more people of color,” he tweeted that same day.

After his speech before the Iowa legislature, Wahls continued to be a LGBTQ advocate and wrote a book on the subject, “My Two Moms: Lessons of Love, Strength and What Makes a Family.”

After Wahls announced the results, congratulations poured in.

There is no Republican running for the seat. Wahls will face Libertarian candidate Carl Krambeck in November.
