Yvonne Craig, the actress that played the original Batgirl in the 1960s "Batman" TV show, died Monday at age 78 at her California home in Pacific Palisades, her family announced.

According to USA Today, Craig was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago. It metastasized to her liver, and she died of related complications.

"She had been in chemo almost continuously for the past two plus years since being diagnosed and that had weakened her immune system as well as her body," Craig's family said in a statement.

"This didn't dampen her sense of humor or her spirit, she intended to fight and win this battle. In the end, her mind still wanted to fight but her body had given up."

Craig, a trained dancer, did her own stunts as Batgirl, and also appeared in episodes of "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.," "Star Trek," "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea," "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis," and "77 Sunset Strip."

On the big screen, Craig stared alongside Elvis Presley in "It Happened at the World's Fair" and "Kissin' Cousins."

Craig's family said in its statement that "Yvonne excelled in ballet, a film career, a business life, as well as in philanthropic and charity work over the years," and that she would surely wish that "no one waste a moment of their time in mourning for her loss in sadness but instead celebrate the awesome life she had been fortunate enough to live."

"I hear from women that I was their role model," Craig told CNN in an interview earlier this year. "When I was a little girl, I realized that girls could kick butt just like guys," she said her fans would say.

In addition to her acting career, Craig penned a memoir, "From Ballet to the Batcave and Beyond."

Craig is survived by husband Kenneth Aldrich, her sister Meridel Carson, and nephews Christopher and Todd Carson.

Many people took to Twitter to memorialize Craig's passing, and a few notable comments are gathered below.
