Yunsong Zhao, a Virginia Tech freshman, was arrested on Monday for possessing an assault rifle and attempting to buy 5,000 rounds of ammunition, USA Today reported.

The 19-year-old student, who was arrested after an investigation, also allegedly purchased a police vehicle and modified it with a special bumper and was researching bulletproof vests.

In arrest warrants seen by local TV station WDBJ, Zhao was charged with possessing an assault firearm while not being lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the U.S.

His family lives in China and, although The Collegiate Times noted that Zhao had no previous criminal record in China, he had only been living in Blacksburg for six months.

Police first became aware of Zhao's movements after being alerted to his purchase of a 30-round rifle magazine on Jan. 22 and then a Bushmaster XM-15 semiautomatic rifle three days later, USA Today said.

The following day he checked the rifle out from the student gun locker and went down to a local shooting range, where he was followed by Blacksburg Police Department detectives who witnessed him fire a .223 caliber weapon with a 30-round magazine.

Zhao was arrested and is currently being held at the Montgomery County Jail without bail, with his preliminary court hearing scheduled for March 1.

Virginia Tech Police Chief Kevin Foust confirmed that Zhao was arrested and taken into custody on Moday without incident.

Virginia Tech released a statement in which it noted that "at no time during this investigation did police believe there was any threat to our community, nor is there one now."

Meanwhile, Zhao's attorney, Jason Wolfrey, said in an emailed statement on Tuesday that he anticipated that evidence presented at a bond hearing scheduled for Thursday afternoon would demonstrate that the "fears associated with this case have been significantly over sensationalized and there was never any threat to the community," NBC News reported.
