YouTube Red, the site's new paid subscription service, was announced Wednesday, and offers users a unique feature set for $9.99 a month.

"With YouTube Red, subscribers will be able to save YouTube videos for offline play, listen to videos in the background while browsing other mobile apps and watch all YouTube videos without ads," reported Time magazine.

"YouTube Red will have a big emphasis on music as well, providing access to streaming service Google Play Music and a new app called YouTube Music, which offers a Pandora-like personalized playlist based on a starting song or artist."

The new service will compete with other premium video services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Instant Video, Hulu, HBO Go, Spotify and Apple Music.

Chief Business Officer Robert Kyncl said at the launch event that the service will be available starting Oct. 28.

Kyncl added that "the vast, vast majority of revenue" derived from YouTube Red will go to paying the creators of the videos and songs available through the service.

TechCrunch reported, however, that, "Subscriptions music service Spotify pays 70% and Apple Music pays 71.5%. Earlier this year, a change to YouTube Partner Program Terms said creators would be paid just 55% of revenue. That would be comparatively low."

The publication added that content creators were bullied into signing new revenue-sharing contracts, as Google, the owner of YouTube, threatened to hide their videos from the public if they didn't sign.

"Google says the goal is to offer consistency, so people thinking about subscribing to Red don’t have to worry about their favorite content not being available in the ad-free service," the publication wrote. "But there’s no explanation why it couldn’t just flag videos of those who don’t sign the deal as 'Not On Red,' and instead had to go with a sign-or-disappear strategy."
