Japan’s Anti-Doping Agency announced Tuesday that Japanese kayaker Yasuhiro Suzuki would be banned from the sport for eight years for spiking rival Seiji Komatsu’s drink with an anabolic steroid in September prior to the national championships so that Komatsu would fail a drug test.

Komatsu was disqualified from the 2017 Canoe Sprint Japan Championships after failing the test, but an investigation ensued when he denied taking the drugs.

The Japan Canoe Federation has restored Komatsu’s records that were stripped after the disqualification and reversed Komatsu’s suspension from the sport, ESPN reported.

Suzuki admitted to putting methandienone in Komatsu’s drink, saying he did so because he didn’t think he could win the national championship against Komatsu.

JADA said it was the first incident involving “deliberate contamination” by another athlete in its history, according to Bleacher Report.

Suzuki and Komatsu were the frontrunners in the competition for a place at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The Japan Canoe Federation also found that Suzuki, 32, had sabotaged other athletes’ chances at multiple competitions by stealing others’ tools or gear, NPR reported. Suzuki confessed to officials about his actions because he felt guilty about Komatsu’s ban.

Going forward, the canoeing federation plans to have a designated area for athletes to store their drinks at competitions and will start a speaking program to teach athletes about fair play and justice in sports and competitions.

Twitter users seemed surprised that kayaking was such a serious and cutthroat sport.
