An Indiana couple hit a $700,000 jackpot thanks to a mistake by a store employee who sold them the wrong lottery ticket.
Herby Shehorn, a retired carpenter in Indiana, made the purchase at a local store last month but, instead of receiving $10 in Mega Millions like he asked, the employee accidently gave him $10 in CA$H 5 tickets, according to the Hoosier Lottery.
Shehorn only noticed the mistake when he got back home but decided to let it go. The decision earned him and his wife of 21 years, Cori Shehorn, a total of $703,588 before taxes.
“The next morning I went in and said, ‘I’m sure glad you screwed up,’” Herby Shehorn said.
The couple said they plan to save half the money and use the remainder to renovate their house.
The previous week, a retired railroad worker in Indiana won a $50,000 Powerball prize, but only realized his luck when curiosity sent him to check his ticket at the local store.
“I went into the store I normally go to, I scanned it and it said, ‘You’re a winner,’” said Jim Gibson, according to Hoosier Lottery.
The scanner did not tell him the amount he had won, so Gibson went to a cashier to check the ticket.
“He says, ‘Do not lose this ticket. I don’t know what you’ve won, but it’s serious,’” Gibson said.
There is an unofficial saying that anyone can win the lottery, but CNBC noted the odds are unlikely.
According to the news outlet, a person has a better chance of being struck by an asteroid or killed by a shark.
