Writers Guild Awards: HBO, 'Handmaid's Tale,' 'Get Out' Honored

The Writers Guild Awards honored HBO three times and "The Handmaid's Tale" gave Hulu two wins on Sunday, in one of the biggest awards shows before the Academy Awards on March 4, according to Entertainment Weekly.

HBO winners included "Veep" won for best writing on a comedy series, "Big Little Lies" for best writing for a long-form adapted series, while "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" won for comedy/variety talk series, noted Entertainment Weekly.

Hulu's "The Handmaid's Tale" was the only show to win two honors, capturing best writing for a drama series and new series, the magazine stated.

Variety wrote that the biggest winner of the night may have been Jordan Peele, who won for best original screenplay for the satirical horror movie "Get Out." Peele beat out Guillermo del Toro and Vanessa Taylor, writers for the heavyweight Oscar contender "The Shape of Water" and Greta Gerwig, of "Lady Bird," for the award.

"Does a WGA victory mean 'Get Out' has the reserves to shock the world as the Academy's best picture winner on Oscar night? Of course not," Variety wrote. "That would be a simplification. But it’s worth pondering. It could also simply mean there is an obvious choice for screenplay honors this year and everything is tracking."

Peele, who accepted the award in Los Angeles, said he first conceived of "Get Out" in 2008 and encouraged writers to stick with their craft, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"This was a passion project," Peele said, per The Hollywood Reporter. "It was something that I put my love into, I put my soul into. … To everyone in this room that is a writer, keep taking chances, take big risks, put your love into it. It does pay off. It can take a long time, but our voices really do matter."

The Writers Guild of America members vote of the best writing annually for film and television.

Other winners, according to Entertainment Weekly include:

  • Adapted Screenplay: "Call Me by Your Name"
  • Documentary Screenplay: "Jane," National Geographic
  • Long Form Original: "Flint," Lifetime
  • Animation: "Time's Arrow, BoJack Horseman," Netflix
  • Episodic Drama: "Chicanery, Better Call Saul," AMC
  • Episodic Comedy: "Rosario's Quinceanera, Will & Grace," NBC
  • Comedy/Variety Specials: "39th Annual Kennedy Center Honors," CBS
  • Quiz and Audience Participation: "Hollywood Game Night," NBC
  • Daytime Drama: "General Hospital," ABC
