John Chandler boasted he made the “world’s best lasagna” when he posted his recipe in 2001 on AllRecipes.com. He wasn’t kidding, according to the approximately 12 million views that rank it the most popular recipe on the website.
"I did not think much about it [at the time] and did not think it was the world's best, but named it tongue-in-cheek,"
Chandler said on "Good Morning America."

The Dallas home cook and dad of two, who prefers grilling, said his gooey dish derives its appeal, in part, because “there is no kitchen trickery.”
Chandler, who isn’t Italian, said his signature dish is cook-friendly.
“It's a very simple, easy recipe that everyone can appreciate and that everyone has in their pantry the things to make this. You don't need special equipment or a master's in cooking," Chandler said on "Good Morning America."
Chandler posted the recipe at the urging of his then-girlfriend. Since 2001, it has been reprinted in countries across the globe and in numerous languages.
"What is flattering is that people have made it their own. They've changed it and added red wine or rosemary. It's not just my lasagna; everyone has shared in it."
Chandler’s recipe has more than 27,000 Pinterest shares and nearly 8,000 reviews, most of them 5-star.
Reviewers on AllRecipes.com hailed the delectable dish.
“I made this for the guys at Engine 42's firehouse in downtown Chicago,” wrote one poster. “We have 22 firefighters every day so it's rough to find something that everyone likes. They absolutely loved this recipe.”
Wrote another: “OMG!! Just finished making this for the first time. Have it in the refrigerator right now for the college kids tomorrow night. I could not stay away from the sauce! Well worth the extra time. Fresh basil, parsley and cheeses are a must and also red wine instead of water!!! Will be making this all winter long, thanks for sharing!!!”
