The announcement of an impending world chocolate shortage by two of the biggest chocolate manufacturers sent tremors of fear and disbelief through the Internet.

Mars Inc. and Barry Callebaut AG told Bloomberg that chocolate consumption has been outstripping production, and that trend is expected to continue.

By 2030, the companies shared, the amount of chocolate the world eats will be 2 million tons more than what is produced, Bloomberg News said.

The Washington Post reported that chocolate is becoming more popular in China, where purchases are rising, and the increasing popularity of dark chocolate, which takes more cocoa to make, is adding to the challenge.

Disease, drought, and the replacement of cacao crops by products like corn that earn more money are causing the shortage, Bloomberg said.

Cue cries of distress.

Hope for all the chocolate junkies out there lies in science. Research is being done on a new cacao crop that is more disease resistant and still flavorful.

Still, even with such progress being made, Bloomberg said supply was barely keeping up with need in 2014. Prices have been skyrocketing, too, in the last decade. From 1993 to 2007, cocoa was about $1,465 a ton; but in the past six years, it saw an 87 percent increase to $2,736 a ton.
