Woman With Transplanted Uterus Gives Birth

A woman with a transplanted uterus gave birth for the first time in U.S. history.

The new mother, whose identity has been withheld, was born without a uterus but received a transplant from a living donor at the Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas last year, according to The New York Times.

The hospital revealed on Friday that she gave birth to a boy last month, all thanks to Dallas nurse Taylor Siler, who donated her uterus in an effort to give other women the opportunity to experience motherhood, Time reported.

Siler is a mother of two boys, ages 6 and 4, and had decided with her husband to not have any more children when she came across a news segment about the uterus transplant program and decided to become a donor.

There have been eight other babies successfully born to women who have undergone a uterus transplant since 2014, but all of them have been at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden, The Washingotn Post noted.

This latest birth could change the trajectory of U.S. medicine.

"This first live birth to a uterus transplant recipient in the United States was a milestone in our work to solve absolute uterine factor infertility; but, more importantly, a beautiful moment of love and hope for a mother who had been told she would never be able to carry her own child," Giuliano Testa, the principal investigator of the uterine transplant clinical trial at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, said in a statement.

Eight women included in Baylor's clinical trial have received uterus transplants, with one recipient being pregnant, The Washington Post noted.

Two other recipients are trying to conceive but unfortunately the transplants for the four remaining recipients have failed.

What separates this surgery from other transplants is that it is a temporary procedure designed to allow for women to conceive and give birth before the uterus is surgically removed, Tech Times said.
