A woman being hailed as a "layaway angel" paid off $20,000 of layaway accounts at a Bellingham, Massachusetts, Toys R Us.

“This incredible act of kindness is a true illustration of holiday giving at its best,” the company said in a statement.

Although the woman made the donation anonymously, a local newspaper said she was a resident who told an employee she would “sleep better at night” because the accounts were paid. She also hugged the store manager and said, “If you have it, give it,” the Milford Daily News reported.

Employees described her as a “bubbly older woman,” the newspaper said.

The Daily News said some of the people who had layaway accounts started crying when they heard the news.

A company spokesperson told the Daily News that she is one of many “layaway angels” who go to Toys R Us stores during the holiday season to “pay it forward.”

In Woburn, Massachusetts, another man paid $1,200 for layaway accounts of eight people who were standing behind him in line, the Daily News said.

“With the holidays here, people look for interesting ways to spread some cheer,” a company spokesperson told the Daily News, attempting to explain the phenomenon. “It’s a fascinating gesture. I find it interesting that it happened back-to-back weeks in Massachusetts.”

One woman, who was identified by the Daily News as Linda, said she went from “store to store last weekend with just $9 in her pocket desperately looking for one that would accept a few dollars for a layaway purchase of toy cars and racetracks for her sons, ages 10 and 11.”

When she heard her account was paid off, she told the newspaper, “I thought, ‘You have to be kidding me. I almost wanted to cry. It was only $50, but to me that’s a lot of money, and that someone would go and do that gave me chills. What she did was so caring and thoughtful. I feel like I was part of something special — touched by an angel.”
