Woman, 103, Gets Diploma From High School Nearly 90 Years Later

Mari Hunt, a 103-year-old Spring Green, Wisconsin, woman, has finally received her high school diploma.

Hunt would have gotten a diploma and graduated in 1928, but dropped out after eighth grade.

“It's something I always wanted to do,” Hunt told WKOW-TV of getting her diploma. “And I didn't have the opportunity to go and now 100 years later, here I am!”

River Valley High School and the Spring Green School District officials presented the 103-year-old Hunt with her diploma during a ceremony at her assisted living facility April 10.

Hunt, one of 11 siblings, dropped out of school because she lived too far away from the school, My Fox Philly reported. She stayed home to take care of her siblings.

"I was born in 1911, and there was no way that country kids six miles away could go to high school," she told the station. "It was a dream I always had but one that could never be fulfilled."

Hunt used a walker to get down the hall as “Pomp and Circumstance” played.

“We thought it was a fantastic idea to do the graduation here and support her,”
Carrie Georgeson, RN administrator at Meadows Assisted Living, told WISC-TV.

The honorary degree was the first of its kind presented by the high school.

Three of Hunt’s siblings went to college, and she has wondered whether she might have been college material, too.

Twitter users seemed inspired by the story.
