A wolf has killed a cow in California for the first time in 100 years, the Sacramento Bee reported, and the animal was seen still lurking around the scene.

The incident was confirmed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, which came to the scene after being alerted by a local farmer claiming to have seen five wolves near the carcass.

Investigators confirmed that a calf had been killed by a wolf and, according to the report, the animal was seen lurking about while fish and wildlife agents were at the scene.

The Sacramento Bee said the wolf was a member of the Lassen Pack and, according to GPS co-ordinates taken from the collar of the pack’s breeding female, she was in the area for at least six hours during the night that the calf was killed.

This is not the first time the state has had to investigate a calf’s death.

Ranch owner Wally Roney said four other calves of his have been killed in recent months and believed all deaths were linked to the wolf pack, Fox News reported.

The incident has sparked new tensions amongst farmers who have harbored anxieties about the threat of wolves since they were re-introduced to Northern California in 2011.

California Cattlemen’s Association President Dave Daley said in a statement that current California law provided ranchers and fish and wildlife agents very few tools for deterring and managing wolves and offered limited options for protecting livestock.

Meanwhile, California Farm Bureau Federation President Paul Wenger said it was important for Californians to understand the full implications of the wolf’s return.

“People need to recognize wolves not as cute woodland creatures but as predators that kill.”

Amaroq Weiss, the wolf advocate at the Center for Biological Diversity, said via the Sacramento Bee that livestock could die from numerous causes and it was a given that “there will occasionally be predations of livestock.”
