Four new events will be introduced at the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics when they kick off Feb. 9-25, including big air snowboarding which has proved popular at the annual X Games.

The other three – alpine race team, curling mixed doubles and mass-start speed skating – add new twists to sports already seen, Sports Illustrated reported.

Big air snowboarding, where snowboarders went off the world's tallest snow ramp at Aspen, which is 160 feet high, has been around since the mid-1990s, according to NBC Sports. The big event was brought back permanently for the X Games in 2008 for men and in 2107 for women, and it’s one of that event's top attractions.

Snowboarders will be propelled 20 to 30 feet in the air with three runs in the finals, where their tricks will be judged on difficulty, execution, amplitude and landing, according to Sports Illustrated. Canadians Max Parrot, 23, and Mark McMorris, 24, are the favorites on the men's side while Austria's Anna Gasser, 26, will be the women's snowboarder to watch.

In alpine team race,16 mixed-gender teams of six to go head-to-head and side-by-side in single elimination runs of two, making it all about beating your opponent next to you than beating a stop watch. The losing team after each run will be knocked out of the competition leading to the final two teams for the gold medal race, per Sports Illustrated. Austria won the 2017 world championships.

In curling mixed doubles, a two-person team – one man and one woman – throws five stones per end, and a game is eight ends. While teams from Canada, Switzerland, and Sweden are the favorites, the American brother-sister team of Matt and Becca Hamilton will be trying to break through for a medal, Sports Illustrated and USA Today said.

The Hamiltons will be cheered on by Washington Redskins tight end Vernon Davis, who became hooked on curling before the 2010 Vancouver Olympics when he played for the San Francisco 49ers and has been named honorary captain, USA Today noted.

Mass-start speedskating, which was introduced in World Cup competition in 2011, features 24 skaters competing at the same time about a 400-meter track for 16 laps. Host South Korea could get a medal in this event, and so could Italy's Francesca Lollobrigida, the great niece of actress Gina Lollobrigida, on the women's side, according to Sports Illustrated.
