Willie Robertson SOTU: 'Duck Dynasty' Star Is Guest of Louisiana Rep.

“Duck Dynasty” star Willie Robertson will attend Tuesday's State of the Union speech as a freshman Congressman’s guest.

“I am proud to have my close friend, constituent and small-business owner, Willie Robertson, attend tonight's State of the Union Address as my special guest,” Louisiana Rep. Vance McAllister said in a statement obtained by E! Online. “Willie is thankful for this opportunity and honored to attend. I look forward to the two of us representing the 5th District in D.C. this evening and bringing some diversity to our nation's Capitol.”

Representatives and other officials often invite a guest to witness the State of the Union address, and First Lady Michelle Obama has invited two survivors of the Boston Marathon bombings as her guests, along with openly gay NBA player Jason Collins.

Supporters of Rep. Vance McAllister largely credit his upset victory in a special election last year for Louisiana’s 5th District seat to an endorsement by “Duck Dynasty” patriarch Phil Robertson. The elder Robertson found himself embroiled in controversy recently after A&E briefly suspended him over controversial comments he made regarding gays and blacks in an interview with GQ magazine.

While the Robertson clan has received enormous support from fans since Phil Robertson was suspended, the show’s ratings have fallen since the controversy began. Variety reports that one week after the fifth season began with a 3.3 rating in the 18- to 49-year-olds category and 8.5 million viewers overall, “Duck Dynasty” slid to a 2.9 in the 18-to-49 category and 6.65 million total viewers last week.

Phil Robertson based his endorsement on the fact that McAllister was an outsider who had never been to Washington before. McAllister recently told the Chamber of Commerce in Monroe, La., where “Duck Dynasty” is filmed, that he would never have been to the nation’s capital had he not been elected as a congressman.

“It ain't no fun,” he said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “But the day I start enjoying it in Washington, D.C., is the day I should come home.”
