White nationalists lost their Twitter verifications on Wednesday as the social media company dropped the blue check mark from Jason Kessler and other accounts known to be connected with the so-called alt-right, USA Today reported.

In a series of posts Twitter said that its verification system became to be recognized by some as an endorsement and that it errored in not correcting that perception earlier. Twitter stated, though, that white nationalists can still hold accounts and post on them.

Controversy over Twitter's blue checkmark verification came when Kessler, the organizer of August's Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, was given a verification last week, USA Today reported, sparking an outcry among some Twitter users.

Kessler posted the notice he received from Twitter adding that other alt-right supporters like Richard Spencer also lost his verification checkmark.

Charlottesville's rally, which protested the statue removal of Confederate hero Robert E. Lee from a park, turned violent and counter-protestor Heather Heyer died when she was hit by a vehicle allegedly driven by a protest supporter.

Spencer confirmed that his verification was taken away as well.

The Guardian reported that conservative activist Laura Loomer, the English Defence League founder Tommy Robinson also lost their verifications.

CNN Money reported that some of the social media site's users complained that Twitter was not aggressive enough in removing some verified users from the platform because of alleged harassing posts.

Twitter had cited that the newsworthiness of the post was taken into consideration as to whether the tweet should be removed, the broadcaster stated. CNN Money said that the company declined to comment on the newest batch of removals Wednesday.
