West Virginia teachers are planning a statewide strike that could see school personnel in every county walk out if their demands on pay, health insurance benefit cuts and other issues aren't met.

The Huffington Post reported the strike is set for Thursday and Friday and, if it goes ahead, will mark the first time in 30 years that teachers and school personnel in West Virginia schools districts walked off their jobs.

The strike has been brewing for weeks, The Charleston Gazette-Mail reported.

Mounting tensions culminated at a rally at the state capitol in Charleston, where teachers had gathered to make their voices heard and the state’s two teachers’ unions threatened the statewide protest.

“I want to let the lawmakers know that teachers deserve a pay raise, and more so than a pay raise, we need PEIA funded,” said Jami Hefner, a Braxton County Teacher, WOWK-TV reported.

“We’ve been trying to negotiate with the House, the Senate and the governor,” said Dale Lee, president of the West Virginia Education Association, per West Virginia MetroNews. “But it’s clear the negotiations are going nowhere.”

The Huffington Post noted that teachers and other public employees received their last across-the-board raise in 2014 and, with public employees’ health care programs not being funded by state legislature, it means that workers are experiencing deductions in their take-home pay.

“I don’t think people recognize how dire it is, and how it directly impacts students’ learning,” said Christine Campbell, president of the American Federation of Teachers-West Virginia, per The Huffington Post.

“Teacher vacancies are increasing. There are classrooms with no teacher of record. ... We’ve actually been educating teachers at our universities in West Virginia and they’re not staying here.”
