A web browser controlled by voice is in the works by Mozilla, where it will be able to read online articles for the user and give assistance to those who are visually impaired, Mashable reported Thursday.

A voice-controlled browser could open up the web to more people and allow people to search the web without the need of looking at a display.

Mozilla's Scout voice-control app is an "early-stage project," which suggests development could still be a long way away, Mashable said.

The tech website CNET reported that Mozilla unveiled the Scout as an agenda item at its internal All Hands meeting this week in San Francisco.

"With the Scout app, we start to explore browsing and consuming content with voice," Mozilla said, according to CNET.

The latest artificial intelligence technology has played a critical role in emerging devices using voice like Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple's Siri, CNET reported. The voice control browser could lead to Mozilla competing stronger with Google Chrome, which has 58 percent of the web usage market compared with Firefox's 5 percent, the website said.

Mozilla has not commented publicly about the project, other than to say it is in its early stages.

"We use our internal All Hands conference to come together so we can plan and build for the future," Mozilla said, per CNET. "We look forward to discussing these efforts publicly when they are further developed."

CNET wrote that Mozilla rolled out its first Firefox Quantum in November, which was built to improve the browser's speed. Firefox has been downloaded 100 million times, and people are sticking with the browser 6 percent more than in the past, chief marketing officer Jascha Kavkas-Wolff said Tuesday, according to CNET.

Mozilla was founded in 2003 and grew from previous band Phoenix, Firebird to its current Firefox browser, the website Extreme Tech said.
