The Weather Channel has stormed into immersive mixed reality with an unforgettable live broadcast that simulated a tornado ripping up the studio.

Windows shattered, powerlines came crashing down and at one point a wrecked car plummeted from the sky as on-camera meteorologist Jim Cantores dipped and dodged while he delivered a narration of a virtual tornado, TV Technology reported.

The impressive visual effects were created using immersive AR technology, which is the result of a partnership between The Weather Channel and Norwegian-based developer The Future Group, which developed its version of the immersive mixed reality through its Epic Games Unreal game engine.

"We wanted to do something that would bring [weather stories] to our audience in a strong and memorable way," said Michael Potts, vice president of design at The Weather Channel, according to Fast Co Design. "We want great moments. We want to engage our audience, and we want our content to be shareable."

In a blog post, Potts explained that the immersive mixed reality presentations will combine "360 HD video and augmented and virtual reality elements that are driven by real-time data and our expert on-air talent to transport our audience into the heart of the weather."

He added that this type of weather broadcasting was something that had never been done before.

"We are excited to continue our investment in the latest technologies that are not just cutting-edge, but on the bleeding edge of design and science," he wrote.

The Weather Channel said it was aiming to infuse 80 percent of its broadcasts with similar mixed-reality effects.
