Wayne W. Grigsby Jr., an Army general and former commander of the 1st Infantry Division, was reprimanded and demoted from major general to brigadier general for an affair with a junior officer.

The Washington Post reported Grigsby is the sixth general in the past year to be punished by the Army for sexual misconduct or improper interactions with women. Investigators found that Grigsby had called and texted a female captain more than 850 times over 10 months and was spending time at her home, according to documents obtained by the Post.

In September, Grigsby was relieved of his duty as commander of the 1st Infantry Division with little explanation, noted Military.com.  Army spokesman Col. Patrick Seiber revealed at the time that the general was under investigation.

Military.com noted that Grigsby's official biography at the time said he was married with five children and grandfather of two.

According to an Army inspector general report, an anonymous complainant said Grigsby's wife found out about the affair with the female captain, had moved out of their quarters at Fort Riley, and "posted messages regarding cheating on Twitter," according to the Post.

Grigsby told the Post in a statement that he was "embarrassed and disappointed in myself" and apologized for causing "pain" to his family and the Army.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reported that Grigsby's tenure with the 1st Infantry Division "relatively uncontroversial," with the exception of a dispute in the summer of 2016 over a prayer breakfast that resulted in retired Lt. Gen. Jerry Boykin being disinvited as a speaker.

The newspaper said Boykin came under criticism as promoting a "screed of fundamentalist Christian supremacy, primacy, exclusivity and triumphalism."

Military.com said Grigsby had multiple deployments abroad and commanded troops in such countries as Iraq and Jordan.

Grigsby has received multiple awards, including the Defense Superior Service Medal (with one Oak Leaf Cluster), the Legion of Merit (with five Oak Leaf Clusters), the Bronze Star Medal (with two Oak Leaf Clusters), and the Meritorious Service Medal (with four Oak Leaf Clusters), according to Military.com.
