Wayne Simmons, a Fox News expert who claimed to be a former deep-cover operator for the Central Intelligence Agency, was arrested and charged with making fraudulent claims that he worked for the government for nearly 30 years.

Simmons, who has been regularly interviewed on Fox and other media outlets, claims on his website that he was recruited out of the U.S. Navy to work with a CIA "Outside Paramilitary Special Operations Group" where he "spearheaded Deep Cover Intel Ops against some of the world's most dangerous Drug Cartels and arms smugglers from central and South America and the Middle East."

But in an indictment unsealed Thursday, the 62-year-old Simmons is charged with lying about his connection to the CIA, The Washington Post reported. Simmons made false statements and committed major fraud against the U.S., and wire fraud, the court documents said.

Prosecutors allege that Simmons' lies earned him a spot with a government contractor in 2008 to work as the "Human Terrain System Team Leader," and he also reportedly received an interim security clearance, The Post said. But those were earned by "falsely stating that he had been recruited to the CIA in 1973, that he had not previously been charged with or convicted of a felony offense, that his prior arrests and criminal convictions were directly related to his supposed intelligence work for the CIA, and that he had held a top secret security clearance from 1973 to 2000."

Simmons also has a "significant criminal history, including convictions for a crime of violence and firearms offenses, and is believed to have had an ongoing association with firearms notwithstanding those felony convictions," The Huffington Post quoted the indictment.

On his website, Simmons lists links to some of his many guest appearances on Fox News, where he often talked about terrorism.
