A water slide accident killed a 10-year-old boy, the son of a Kansas lawmaker, during Elected Officials Day at Schlitterbahn water park in Kansas City, Kansas, on Sunday.

The boy, Caleb Thomas Schwab, son of Rep. Scott Schwab and his wife, Michele, died on the Verrückt, which is billed as the tallest water slide in the world at 17 stories, The Kansas City Star reported.

"Since the day he was born, he brought abundant joy to our family and all those who he came into contact with," the family said in a statement. "As we try to mend our home with him no longer with us, we are comforted knowing he believed in his Savior, Jesus, and they are forever together now. We will see him another day."

The water park remained closed on Monday, and the ride will remain closed indefinitely pending an investigation and inspector’s approval.

Details of the accident weren't immediately available.

"We honestly don’t know what’s happened," Schletterbahn spokeswoman Winter Prosapio said, according to the Star. "That’s why a full investigation is necessary. We have to understand what’s happened."

Leslie Castaneda, of Kansas City, Kansas, told KMBC-TV that the boy's brother confronted a worker after the accident.

“The little boy said to a worker, 'I just saw my little brother die because of one of your attractions,'" Castaneda told the station. "[The boy] looked skinny. He shouldn’t have been on that ride."

Riders must be at least 54 inches tall to go on the ride on multiperson rafts.

The 2014 opening of the Verrückt, which means "insane" in German, was delayed multiple times as workers tried to make the ride safe, The Associated Press reported.

Engineers had to refigure the ride at a cost of $1 million after rafts carrying sandbags flew off the slide during tests. Prosapio said the park's rides are inspected daily and reviewed by an outside party at the start of each season.

A GoFundMe campaign was established to help raise money for funeral expenses.

Many Twitter users shared condolences.
