Walmart has closed a price-matching loophole that caused the giant discount chain to be tricked into selling the popular PS4 gaming console for about $300 cheaper than its original price.

According to CNBC, the fraud occurred when customers took advantage of Walmart's price-matching policy for certain online retailers and used fake Amazon.com listings to buy $400 PlayStation 4 consoles for as low as $90 in some instances.

Kotaku.com reported that customers would create the false listings like "AmzonElectronics" and take them to cashiers at Walmart in an effort to fool frontline employees.

"Though Amazon is quick to remove fake listings like that – and you'll never get that $90 PS4 from them – it's still simple to snag a screenshot and bring it to one of the big box stores," Kotaku reported. "And that's... pretty much it."

Walmart's announced it won't accept prices from marketplace vendors, third-party sellers, auction sites or sites requiring memberships, reported CNBC.

Norman Caruso, creator and editor of The Gaming Historian, posted one customer's receipt from Walmart after purchasing a discounted PS4 before the company adjusted its price-match guarantee, reported Digital Trends.com.

"We can't tolerate fraud or attempts to trick our cashiers," Walmart said in a statement. "This kind of activity is unfair to the millions of customers who count on us every day for honest value."

Customers found out about the change from signs posted in stores, according to one posting on Twitter.

"This is one example of the many unethical and even illegal methods that some consumers use to game the system," Joe LaRocca, president of retail loss prevention consultant business RetaiLPartners, told CNBC.

Retailers estimated to the National Retail Federation that they lost about $3 billion in fake sales last holiday season.
