A veterans nonprofit organization accused of being heavy on telemarketing and salaries, instead of helping veterans, is being investigated in Virginia.

Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring has targeted the Center for American Homeless Veterans, based out of Falls Church, and is seeking information in a "civil investigative demand," according to the Center for Public Integrity.

Politico reported in December that the Circle of Friends for American Veterans, another nonprofit run by Brian Arthur Hampton, who heads up the Center for American Homeless Veterans, spends most of its money on telemarketers and Hampton’s salary rather than charity work.

The Center for Public Integrity said GOP Rep. Walter B. Jones have asked leaders of two U.S. House committees to investigate veterans charities that mislead donors, and pointed to a Center of Public Integrity probe of the Center for American Homeless veterans as an example.

"Congress should not sit on the sidelines while unscrupulous individuals abuse their tax-exempt status, fleece donors and take advantage of the men and women who have served our great nation and their families," Jones wrote in a letter to the leaders of the House Committee on Ways and Means and the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, per the Center of Public Integrity.

The center claimed that Hampton runs the Center for American Homeless Veterans, the Circle of Friends for American Veterans and the political action committee Put Vets First! out of the same Virginia office.

According to Hampton’s Center for American Homeless Veterans biography, he is a U.S. Army veteran who served in Vietnam and remained active in the Army Reserve for 22 years before starting the organization to lobby on behalf of veterans.
