Verizon and the NFL have struck a deal to stream league games over the next five years on any mobile carrier.

The new deal is an upgrade to the largest U.S. wireless carrier's previous arrangements that granted it exclusive streaming rights for in-market games only on mobile phones, ESPN reported.

Verizon has expanded to become more than just a mobile carrier, a point that was pronounced when the company purchased AOL and Yahoo for $4.4 billion each, ESPN noted.

According to CBS Sports, the new deal will allow Verizon to stream NFL in-market games to almost any device through Verizon's digital brands such as Yahoo Sports.

"Our expanded partnership with Verizon is great for our fans," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement, per CNBC. "Starting with the upcoming playoffs and for seasons to come, live NFL action directly on your mobile device — regardless of carrier — will give millions of fans additional ways to follow their favorite sport."

Reports of the value of the deal vary, with most media outlets saying Verizon will pay more than $2 billion for the deal.

CNBC noted certain deal changes are scheduled to roll out for the post season, such as access to NFL postseason games.

"Media is one of the major pillars for us now," said Brian Angiolet, the company's global chief media and content officer, according to ESPN. "And sports is going to be the most important part of that content."

Verizon Chairman and CEO Lowell McAdam said the company is making a commitment to become the mobile destination for live sports.

"The NFL is a great partner for us and we are excited to take its premier content across a massive mobile scale so viewers can enjoy live football and other original NFL content where and how they want it," he said in a statement, according to The Verge.
