The year is drawing to a close and with 2020 approaching, it's time to start planning for the year ahead. Travel is something many of us are probably giving thought to but before committing to your destination, it may help to go through this list of destinations that you should avoid in 2020, according to Fodor's Travel.

  1. Barcelona. Barcelona may be one of the world's most beautiful cities, but over-tourism has become a serious issue that is causing dramatic overcrowding.
  2. California's Big Sur. Once a secluded spot, the Big Sur has drawn massive attention in recent years, but there are various issues that locals have highlighted. A lack of public bathrooms is one complaint that has led to "disgusting roadside consequences." Illegal camping is another issue.
  3. Cambodia's Angkor Wat. This temple complex and UNESCO World Heritage Site is suffering as larger crowds visit each year. The foot traffic is straining the foundations of the 900-year-old temples.
  4. Bali. Too much tourism has become such an issue for this Indonesian island that the government is looking at a tourist tax in an effort to combat the negative effects it has on the environment, including trash on the beaches and in the water.
  5. Galapágos National Park. Until now, it has been relatively cheap to access the Galapágos National Park, which has made it a popular tourist destination. But its delicate ecology is suffering as more and more people flock to the islands. In light of this, officials are now proposing a dramatic increase in visitation fees. The final decision will be made on Dec. 31.
  6. Komodo Island. The delicate ecological environment of this UNESCO World Heritage Site in Indonesia is suffering and officials were considering closing the island for a year as tourist interference and poaching threatened the wildlife and dragons. The idea never became a reality, but officials are now considering limiting the number of visitors allowed on the island and adding a tourist tax.
  7. South Africa's Cape Town. There are many positives to Cape Town that make it a beautiful city, including breathtaking scenery, rich cultural heritage, and a vibrant community. Crime, however, has tainted its international popularity.
