Utah Republicans Aim to Repeal Immigration Law

Friday, 29 April 2011 09:59 AM EDT

Utah Republicans who are fighting to repeal the recently enacted immigration law that includes a state-sponsored guest worker program face a critical juncture this weekend.

Opponents of the law are seeking to pass a resolution to repeal the law at the Utah County Republican Convention. The same measure failed to get endorsements at GOP gatherings in several other counties, the Salt Lake Tribune reported Friday.  But it did pass in Salt Lake County. That’s an indication to the resolution’s author, Keri Witte, that there’s still hope to get it enacted.

“If it can pass in the most liberal county in Utah, it should be able to pass in one of the most conservative counties,” Witte said.

Witte has been advocating for repeal of the law, which she says violates the county, state, and national Republican Party platforms by creating an amnesty program.

The law, scheduled to take effect in 2013, has garnered national attention. President Barack Obama recently met with leaders in Utah about the law. However, the law still has little support among Utah’s congressional delegation, the Tribune reported.
