“USS The Deplorables,” a name being petitioned for the next major U.S. Navy ship, appears to take a stab at Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton just months after she coined the phrase “basket of deplorables” while taking a shot at the president-elect’s supporters.
A petition on the White House website is calling for the next Navy ship to be named “USS The Deplorables” in honor of “those citizens who rose up to defend America and the Constitution from the globalists,” Fox News reported.
The name was inspired by something Clinton had said during her campaign in September.
“You know, just to be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables,” Clinton said at the September rally. “The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic – you name it. And, unfortunately, there are people like that. And he has lifted them up.”
Clinton would later apologize for these remarks following backlash from Trump supporters, but perhaps they’re now getting the last laugh.
Not only was Trump victorious in the election, but adding the term “deplorable” to the next warship could be another way to get back at Clinton.
The petition appears on the “We the People” website, which a direct "pipeline" for those who want to communicate something to the White House, Clash Daily noted.
As of Tuesday, the petition needed over 99,000 more signatures by Jan. 3 to get the attention of the White House.
The petition, which was launched on Dec. 4, had received a little more than 760 votes by Wednesday, which is a long way away from the 100,000 needed, Stock News USA noted.
David Winkler, director of programs at the Naval Historical Foundation told Fox News that his “gut reaction when I hear about this was, ‘Would you like to be a sailor deployed on a ship called the USS The Deplorables?’ Do you think someone would really want to say, ‘Look at that ship out there – it’s deplorable?’”
The White House website has featured other petitions as well – petitions including Obama’s impeachment or a demand for states to be authorized to break away from the union, Clash Daily noted.
