The United Kingdom is investigating whether Russia interfered in the Brexit referendum campaign last year, The Times of London reported on Thursday.

The country's election commission told the newspaper it was "in dialogue" with officials from Facebook and Twitter about Russians efforts on their social media sites, echoing the investigation going in the United States connected with its presidential election, the Times stated.

"We are asking questions of Facebook and Twitter and this work is ongoing," Bob Posner, the commission's director of political finance and regulation, told the Times. "We don't just sit back and see what lands on our doorstep."

Arron Banks, a major donor to the anti-European Union campaign, has denied that he violated the commission's finance rules, Reuters reported.

Banks came to the United States with Brexit supporter Nigel Farage after President Donald Trump won the U.S. presidential election, even posing for a picture with the then president-elect, Reuters said.

"We take very seriously issues of Russian intervention, or Russian attempts to intervene, in electoral processes or in the democratic processes of any country," United Kingdom Prime Minister Theresa May said of the investigation, Reuters said.

Banks, 51, an insurance mogul, told Reuters he refuted the investigation, charging that it was a mere attempt to discredit the Brexit result.

"Allegations of Brexit being funded by the Russians ... are complete bollocks (rubbish) from beginning to end," Banks said in a statement to Reuters.

Facebook, Twitter, and Google executives testified before Congress Tuesday in the first of three hearings into how foreign nationals like Russia used social media attempting to affect the 2016 presidential election, CNN reported.

CNN said senators on the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Terrorism pushed the executives on their ability to stop the foreign nationals from taking advantage of their platforms through ads and free posts.
