The U.K.'s announcement this week that it will ban gas and diesel vehicles in the country by 2040 may tackle air pollution and emissions, but some wonder about loss of jobs and where the energy to power electric cars will come from.

At least 600,000 jobs would be threatened by a ban on combustion engines, the German auto industry association VDA claimed, Reuters reported. Jobs at car companies and suppliers would make up 436,000 of them.

In Europe, 112,000 people are employed at 126 plants making combustion engines, including 66,000 making powertrain and another 46,000 making transmissions, Reuters said.

The trade group Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders told BBC News that outright diesel bans could hurt because alternative fuel sources would not be able to keep up with demand.

"The industry instead wants a positive approach which gives consumers incentives to purchase these cars," the society's chief executive, Mike Hawes, told the BBC. "We could undermine the U.K.'s successful automotive sector if we don't allow enough time for the industry to adjust."

The industry, though, appears to be turning more quickly to electric vehicles. BMW stated Tuesday that a fully-electric version of its Mini will be produced in Oxford in 2019 while Volvo said all new models of its vehicles will have electric motors by the same year.

French President Emmanuel Macron said in early July that his country also will phase out gas and diesel cars by 2040.

Many on social media appeared to be skeptical about the policy and how much impact it will have overall on pollution.
